The shank is 2.6 mm wide at the back and swells toward the top, where it is cut flat. The cut leaves a face of 9.7 × 10.1 mm, close to round, 3.05 mm above the inside of the ring.
The ruby is flush set. It drops into a seat drilled into the face, and the metal around the hole is pushed over its edge. The girdle sits just below the surface and the table about level with the metal, so nothing catches on a sleeve. A small hole under the stone lets light in from behind and makes the seat easier to clean.
Solid, the ring weighs about 12 g in 18k gold. Signets are often hollowed out underneath, which takes a few grams off without changing how the ring looks on the hand. That is the next change to make to this model.
