Design notes

Set east-west, the long side of the stone runs across the finger instead of along it. On a slim band that reads wider and lower than the same stone set north-south.

The bezel is a 0.6 mm wall that follows the stone's outline, cut corners included, and laps 0.28 mm over the edge of the crown to hold it. Its base follows the curve of the band, so no gap shows where the wall meets the ring at either end.

The band opens under the stone. Light reaches the back of the tourmaline, and the stone sits 4.4 mm above the finger instead of perched on a closed band.

A full bezel covers the whole edge of the stone. Tourmaline, at 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale, can be worn in an everyday ring, but its toughness is only fair, so a hard knock can chip an exposed edge. Covering the edge is the point of this setting. Claws, bezel or halo compares the options.
